How to tie an ascot tie

Posted by Lance Miller On November - 28 - 2009

Ascot tie; fashion/style statement or hiding a fat neck?

In my humble opinion, I believe that the majority of men look silly when wearing an ascot tie. Only few men, especially those with manly characters and a fatter neck might subtly hide this excess fat by tying an ascot tie around it. Still, for some reason I find that ascot ties should be left for Mafiosi and playboys..

Subtle = nice! “The well-dressed man is he whose clothes you never notice” - W. Somerset Maugham.

The Blues Brothers

blues_brothers_650x4002

Perhaps they aren’t the best example of courtesy, perhaps they shouldn’t use their fedora hats to break in an entry, perhaps they haven’t got the best table manners of even money for cheese on their toast, but I love ‘em.

Pocket Etiquette

Posted by Bobby Humphrey On November - 25 - 2009

Both Worlds

I have both: jackets with the stitched-on pockets and jackets with the conventional flaps. During long discussions with my friends, I noticed that people often think that stitched-on pockets are too casual and dandy for any business environment and prefer the conventional flaps for their conventional job. However, both versions of the pockets have been around forever. I’ve regularly spotted an elderly man with the stitched-on pockets on the jacket. I wonder if the old chap knew he’s a dandy….

Made in China/Italy

Posted by Lance Miller On November - 14 - 2009

Are the ties made in China better or worse than those ties made in Italy?

I was waiting in the queue at the Chinese Embassy in The Hague, to organize my mother’s visa. My mother; Florentine, is going to visit my sister who lives in Shanghai. I have been there twice and think it’s a great city. It’s always busy, it’s hectic, it smells strange but in a good way.. My sister is fascinated by the Chinese culture and speaks nearly fluent Chinese.

Gloves & Suits

Fit like a Glove

Gloves and gauntlets (the extended gloves with the forearm covering) have been worn for centuries long. The glove was a true symbol of honour.

Glasses for your suit

Posted by Lance Miller On November - 7 - 2009

Glasses; necessary or merely a fashion statement, or both?

Large 70s styled frames are hot! Brands such as Tom Ford, Oliver Peoples and Ray-Ban have understood, perhaps even created the trend. Oliver Peoples and Tom Ford are rather young companies; they were founded in 1986 and 2005 respectively. Ray-Ban on the other hand, has been around for a longer time and finds that their older models from the 70s and 80s have started a new life cycle. The next trend; slightly thinner frames, made from preferably metals.

The bigger the better? A man’s thing..? Or compensating behavior?
