Matching Socks with Suits

Matching Socks with Suits

Welcome back dear readers. In my last article we discussed the triple points of a suit: matching the shoes, belt and watchband. When you have successfully scored your triple pointer, it’s time for some in-depth advise on your socks. What kind of materials or colors should you wear?

There is some tolerance in fabrics, but always separate your casual socks from your business socks. Business socks are thinner, more comfortable to wear with your shoes and tend to have dark colors. Whether you want to wear wool or cotton, they are both fine. My advice to you is to always check the label on the socks if they contain any synthetic fabrics. Even a 10% synthetic sock could lead to a unpleasant surprise when taking of your shoes. However, the easiest rule is to feel the fabric and decide on the softest one.

Match your shoes, belt and watchband: Triple Points

Posted by Bobby Humphrey On July - 22 - 2009

Triple points

So you are looking for that killer look. You have successfully found a tailor and a fabric that brings something new to the table. The next step is to complete your appearance with the accessories; the shoes, belt and watch. Preferably, all three should have the same colour and material. Do not mix suede shoes with a smooth leather belt, or even worse, black shoes with a brown belt. However, there is some tolerance in the watchband colours and materials. Let’s start from the bottom up: the shoes.

Always start with the shoes before you purchase your belt. It is easier to find a belt with your new shoes than to find shoes with your new belt. Decide on the type of fabric; smooth leather, suede or creased leather, shiny or matte, light or dark coloured. I personally prefer monk shoes because they are so easy to wear; just strap ‘em on. However, most people will start with laces.

Great Gift for Men - Gentlemen’s Shaving Kit

Posted by Lance Miller On April - 10 - 2009

Give some one the perfect shaving tools!

A great gift for men, is a gentlemen’s shaving kit. A friend who was studying in London, actually gave me my first Kent brush and Taylor of Old Bond Street Gentlemen’s Shaving Cream. Until then I used regular Gillette blades and foam, which I always have disliked since shaving with those tools caused my neck skin to be irritated. With the brush and Gentlemen’s shaving cream, shaving became a much more pleasurable experience and my skin has never felt smoother. First of all, it feels manly brushing the cream on your face. It makes me think of old Italian mafia movies and my grandfather has been shaving like this ever since he has had a beard. In addition, a superior shaving cream like those of Proraso or Taylor of Old Bond Street smell and feel fantastic. They really work your skin and allow for a smoother shave. Forget about Gillette. It’s a different experience you just cannot miss out on.

Cummerbund

Posted by Lance Miller On March - 21 - 2009

Cummerbunds are typically worn with a tuxedo (black tie). They are often shiny and made from silk. They are not functional, but you may store some coins or tickets in the folds. Cummerbunds look better on young and skinny men. With a tuxedo, the cummerbund should be either black or dark blue. If you intend on going to a fashion show then any color will do.

Thom Brown

Posted by Lance Miller On February - 24 - 2009

Thom Brown is a men’s wear designer who is notoriously known for wearing high-water flood pants to show bare ankles. This style makes him unique. His shows have models wearing their pants extremely high too, but usually with socks on to hide the bare skin.

On the left you see Tom Ford. On the Right there’s Thom Brown.

Try a Pocket Square Instead of a Tie

Posted by Lance Miller On February - 23 - 2009

The often overlooked accessory that gives a men’s outfit a completely different look to it, is a must have in any men’s wardrobe.

Not only can it be worn in the breast pocket of the jacket of the suit, but also in the overcoat. Etiquette for smokings is that a pocket square can be worn if it is white, or if you really have to make a statement you may go for red. If you decide to wear a red pocket square, I would also advice wearing red suspenders to see some jealous men lose their girlfriends, to you.
