With or without a tie.
I was in Amsterdam Wednesday evening for dinner and drinks with a friend. We also discussed the purpose of a tie. Do you want to show respect to others who also wear a tie? Is it a norm? Do you find that a tie makes your outfit look more complete? Do you think a tie is just for the formal events? What do you think of the tie and do you find that we are entering a tieless era? An era in which dark slim-fit jeans, a made-to-measure shirt and jacket, Italian goodyear crafted shoes and a matching belt rules at the office? Is the tie-era finished? Will it come back?
Me on Wednesday with a sandwich from the HEMA in my right hand, but no tie! I especially put this shirt together with a two buttoned collar that is three collar sizes too small because then I wouldn’t wear a tie on it. A smaller collar size makes the collar look better around your neck when not buttoned.. That’s why I chose to have it three collar sizes too small. It is a button down to keep the collar in a good position, but the buttons are underneath the collar so you can’t see.
Man do I love Scott’s photography:
What do you think? Hot or not?
See you in the comments!
Lance

Yes you are hot on this picture Lance.
Very intersting comment because I’m wearing also a smaller collar shirt when I wear it open or with my silk-wool tie ungrip for a very artistic way…

Hi Bertie & Lance: Me too!! (smaller collar when going tieless)
@ Bertie: What do you mean with friendly?
I don’t like the white socks in the last picture. The green jacket in the second photo (Scott’s first..) is the best. Anyone knows where I can buy it?
Ciao

Hi,
Matthijs, I mean anything philospohy with “friendly”, it’s just translate with “amicalement” (i’m french) somthing different from best regards…
You can find this kind of green jacket in a military surplus for a very low coast.
Au revoir

I don’t think we are entering a tieless era. In some professions or for some occasions you will always have to wear a tie. I also think ties will always be a nice detail to add to your outfit. But I also like the tieless, a little bit more relaxed, layed back look without a tie. I think you can look more formal or let’s say better without a tie than some people wearing ties, who do not really care about their outfits. So maybe it could be an office-winner!
I know some offices where it is like I said. Some people don’t care about what to wear and always wear suits (that often don’t fit and often don’t look good!) and some people have their own style, their own way of dressing nice. This people sometimes don’t wear ties, sometimes wear jeans and still they always look better than the people, who don’t really care about their outfits.
Personally I really really like the tieless-look, especially when I’m going out at night. A nice detail to add to such an outfit would be a pocket square.

Ok, could have added some more tabs to my post! Sorry!

hahaha….
I really like to wear a tie…. however, it feels good to take off the tie at the end of the day, it’s a sort of homecoming to me… (I never take off my suit). Also, most people I know that have top-management functions rarely wear a tie, perhaps only if they visit their topclients, so let’s hope we can wear our ties as a nice accessory instead of an mandatory part of the suit…. When visiting a club in the weekends, I sometimes wear a tie losely around the collar… the pcket square still remains a great detail Karl!
A bientot mes amies!

Bobby

btw: HEMA-sandwiches are good!
Posted on October 5th, 2009 at 8:33 pm
Haha! Yes they are! Healthy and tasty! HEMA is only good for three things: Rookworst (smoked sausage), their sandwiches and pepernoten during Sinterklaas! (A Dutch Christmas like, non-religious event).. Sounds funny and is impossible to explain..
But HEMA is a typical warehouse that sells everything, from light bulbs to t-shirts. Forget those, check out the food court

What you can also buy there are bike repair sets!
I also bought some candles or something like that! But that’s really off topic here! Anyway, Lance, nice outfit!

TRUE!!! I have one of those bike repair sets too!! With the green cover hahahaa!! Thanks man. It’s a linen SuitSupply suit, LCT made-to-measure shirt (double-cuffed with the left cuff one centimeter shorter than the right to leave some space for the U-Boat watch, Profuomo shoes and belt. I was wondering, do you have a favorite brand suits?

Righty, the repair set in the little green box!
I really really like SuitSupply! The suits are very nice, they fit perfectly, look great and the price is more than ok!
Your watch is hot! Like it!

I totally agree with you Karl. The SuitSupply suits have GREAT value for money! The fit, the quality, the materials, the details, all nice! And a descent price. What the other brands are charging is ridiculous… Higher profit margins… Last post for tonight, I need to get up early and get some work done! Best, Lance

That’s right! I also really love the SuitSupply-Shirts!
Lance, have a nice day! Hope you got to finish your work today! I actually got some work done, now a little beer…

Little beers are no good. Go for pints! Much more effective
It could be that SuitSupply shirts fit you well. For me; the sleeves are too long and because I have a rather FAT neck, the body of the shirt is too wide. And I don’t like the two buttons on the sleeves around the waste. Have a good one and cheers!!

Hehe! Big beers instead!
It seems we are like-minded!
Ok, that’s a matter of choice. But we agree, the suits are superb!

The tie-era will never end. It may enter some new dimensions over time, but finish? No.
I love wearing a tie with a jacket and jeans: http://thedronesclub.wordpress.com/2009/03/13/a-touch-of-england/
A rougher knitted woolen tie with a tweed jacket and jeans is also an example of a wonderful combination on the right occasions. This aswell as the fact that some days just aren’t tie-days. Then, an unbuttoned shirt, accompanied with a well matched handkerchief does the trick along with the suit.
Jeans and less formal dresscodes are here to stay, but men with a true sense of style, brings the tie along and blends it in as a natural part of the outfit.
Cheers!
